A police investigation has been launched after a schoolgirl died following a hit-and-run incident near Faringdon.

The girl, believed to be aged about 12, was struck twice on the A417 road to Wantage. She was hit as she stepped from a bus at about 3.30pm on January 16, near the turn to Shellingford.

The first vehicle to hit her was a Mercedes Sprinter van travelling towards Faringdon on the A417. The girl was then hit by a car travelling in the opposite direction, towards Wantage.

The driver of this vehicle, thought to be a blue or green saloon, failed to stop.

The girl, understood to be local, was airlifted to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, but died later. Her parents were informed, but she is not expected to be named until January 19 at the earliest.

The van driver involved pulled up after hitting the girl and was later questioned by police, but no arrest was made in connection with his part in the incident.
