A firework was forced through the letterbox of an Oxford home by arsonists.
Detectives are investigating the incident in Thrift Place, Blackbird Leys, after fire crews were called at about 8.20pm on Thursday.
Det Sgt Kevin Robinson, of Oxford police, said: "We view incidents like this involving fireworks very seriously. Luckily, this was a small fire, the occupier was out and no-one was hurt.
"However, this sort of act had the potential to cause much more damage and endanger life."
He said it was the second arson in the block of flats during the last two weeks. On the last occasion, an inflammable substance was put through the letterbox of a vacant property.
He appealed for anyone who had seen suspicious activity or youths misbehaving to get in touch.
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 08458 505505, or the free anonymous Crimestoppers number 0800 555111.
