Thames Valley Chief Constable Peter Neyroud wants a new law on replica guns made tougher.
Legislation which came into force on January 20 makes it an offence to carry imitation firearms or weapons in public.
Replica guns are often indistinguishable from the real thing, and police treat every report as a genuine incident.
Mr Neyroud said it should be illegal to buy and sell replica firearms.
