Scientists and engineers at Culham are celebrating their role in the European Mars Express mission.

AEA Battery Systems designed, developed and tested the battery on the Mars Express orbiter spacecraft which beamed back pictures of the Red Planet showing evidence of water -- and the possibility that there was once life on the planet.

The Beagle 2 lander has been silent since it arrived on Mars.

But the Mars Express mother ship has continued to orbit the planet, mapping an area roughly equivalent to half the surface of Europe.

The first results from sophisticated instruments aboard the orbiting spacecraft identified the telltale signature of water ice trapped amid frozen carbon dioxide over the pole.

AEA Battery Systems designed and produced the battery that is delivering energy to the seven instruments aboard Mars Express.

The Lithium-ion battery also supported the orbiter's renewed search for the Beagle 2 lander during the weekend.

The continuing search comes as NASA scientists celebrate linking up again with the NASA rover Spirit as well as the successful landing of their other Mars rover, Opportunity.
