The rector of Westcote with Steeple Barton, the Rev Graeme Arthur has won a bursary to study Hebrew.
He hopes to get closer to the minds of the writers of the scriptures, and separate what was meant to be taken literally from mere story-telling figures of speech.
He received his award at a ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral Chapter House in London by the chairman of Ecclesiastical Insurance, Nicholas Sealy.
In total, 23 members of the clergy received awards from Ecclesiastical Insurance at the ceremony.
