Jefferson Louis threw his hat into the ring for a return to the Oxford United first team with two goals as the U's second string drew 4-4 with Yeovil Res yesterday in a remarkable game.
United raced into a 2-0 lead, before finding themselves 3-2 behind and then 4-3 ahead in the Pontins Holidays Combination Wales & Welsh Division.
U's keeper Simon Cox then had to make the save of the match in the last minute to stop his side falling to an embarrassing defeat.
Fielding an experimental team which saw David Oldfield and Andy Scott playing as centre backs, Oxford took a bizarre lead in the eighth minute when Matt Brandish's corner caught the wind and Yeovil keeper Stephen Collis could only catch the ball over the line.
Ten minutes later, Louis doubled the advantage when he lashed home a fierce effort from 25 yards, giving Collis no chance.
But United's fragile defence was then breached when Shaun Smith shot past Cox from distance in the 36th minute.
Jamie Brooks looked sharp throughout, and almost restored the two-goal advantage, only to shoot inches wide after a mazy dribble.
However, the visitors scored two goals in two minutes after the break to stun the U's, with Jake Edwards and Jamie Gosling taking advantage of some sloppy defending.
Oxford fought back though, with Adam Garner lashing home from a Brandish corner, before Louis scored a fine individual effort to make it 4-3.
But there was still time for Yeovil to hit back, with Dale Williams heading home the late equaliser, as United played with ten men as Oldfield received treatment for a clash of heads.
And in the last minute, Adam Stansfield raced through with just Cox to beat, only for the U's stopper to make a fantastic save.
Oxford Utd Res: Cox, R Tweed, J Tweed, Oldfield, Garner, Scott, Keeble, Brandish, Louis (O'Sullivan 81), Brooks, Carney.
