It is right and proper that councils should stick to their policies.
But exceptions ought to be made when they are merited.
The Oxford Claimants Union Advice Centre has been refused a rescue grant because Oxford City Council chooses not to be its sole supporter.
The centre, which in one year advised more than 700 disabled, homeless, sick, retired and single mothers to get the benefits they were entitled to, worked in an area of the city recognised as being in need of the most help.
Surely the council should give every assistance to those willing to lend a hand? Of course, there are problems, but these could be overcome with consultation and co-operation.
The question is, will the city council be prepared to run its own advice unit in east Oxford? The need is evident.
