A pensioner was critically injured when a fire broke out in his Oxford flat on Monday.
A neighbour was praised for trying to rescue 68-year-old Barry Newell.
Mr Newell was trapped in his ground-floor council flat in George Moore Close, off Iffley Road, when firefighters arrived just before 5am.
He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital suffering from 50 to 70 per cent burns. He was unconscious in a critical, but stable condition last night.
Neighbours Michael Smith and Samantha Hutchinson, both 22, dialled 999 after being woken by a smoke alarm in their flat at 4.30am.
Mr Smith woke other neighbours, before trying to save Mr Newell. Mr Smith said: "We saw smoke coming up through our floor boards and immediately thought it was our flat on fire."
