Ian Atkins believes his Oxford United players now realise what they have to do to win games at the Kassam Stadium - but it's taken them two years to discover it.

Conditions last Saturday, when a gale-force wind ripped through from the open car park end, were as difficult as any United team have had to cope with since the Kassam Stadium opened in August 2001.

But the players remained strong and two headed goals at corners from Steve Basham and Paul McCarthy brought them a 2-1 victory which keeps them on course for automatic promotion from Division 3.

Oxford's home league record this campaign is a magnificent 11-2-0, with just four points dropped out of a possible 39.

And what a contrast that is to the club's first two terms at the three-sided stadium.

In the first season, their home record was 8-7-8 and last season it was 9-7-7, with the home form costing them a place in the play-offs.

Atkins said: "It was an all-important game for us on Saturday and a very big win for us.

"I don't think people realised that, after being in that top bracket for quite a while and then dropping out of it through no real fault of our own, how much extra pressure was on the players.

"I looked at the video of the game again yesterday and we played exceptionally well in terms of passing and movement and in those conditions.

Andy Scott will continue his comeback from a broken leg by playing in tomorrow's Pontin's Holidays Combination reserve team game at Swansea.

And Atkins will decide which of his fringe first-teamers will also get a game.

Atkins had been hoping that United's Oxfordshire Senior Cup tie against Thame United might be played this Sunday, to give Julian Alsop a game after he completes his five-match ban, but it won't be.

There is no date yet for the tie.
