A pensioner treated for severe burns following a fire at his Oxford home has died in hospital.
Barry Newell, 68, was trapped in a blaze at his ground-floor flat in George Moore Close, off Iffley Road, early on Monday.
He was rescued by firefighters after neighbours raised the alarm but suffered 50 to 70 per cent burns in the blaze.
He was taken by paramedics to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington in a critical but stable condition, but died of his injuries later the same day.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service fire risk manager Kevin Parfitt said after the blaze that Mr Newell's home was fitted with a smoke alarm but it was not working at the time of the fire.
Yesterday a spokesman for the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust told the Oxford Mail that Mr Newell had been discharged. The trust has since apologised for the mistake.
