Two councils are at loggerheads over the reopening of an empty shop in Abingdon. One is opposed to a dental practice opening, but the other says it should be allowed.

The property, 45 Stert Street, was once occupied by Melrose Antiques and Crafts, but is now one of six vacant shops in the street.

The Vale of White Horse District Council received an application to use the building as a dental surgery, but rejected the idea because the proposed change would lead to the loss of a shop in what is described as a "primary shopping" area.

However, Abingdon Town Council wanted to see the shop reopened as soon as possible, rather than being left empty.

Vale council executive member Gerry Patterson said: "The loss of a retail unit would be harmful to the vitality of this part of Abingdon town centre and is against the council's policy. I understand the argument that it would be better to have some business in a vacant shop than nothing but we are in danger of losing retail shops."

District councillor Alison Rooke said: "This property has been closed for several years. Surely it would be better to see this property put back into use?"
