Pete Dier smiled with relief after driving into office as the new captain of Frilford Heath.
"That's a weight of my mind," said the nine-handicapper after sending his drive well over 200 yards.
"I didn't want to be remembered for a bad drive, as a previous captain was a few years ago," joked Dier, who has been a member at Frilford for almost half his 59 years.
Dier, who has been a single-figure golfer for more than 20 years, concentrated on golf after hanging up his football boots at Drayton FC.
His other claim to sporting fame is to have played for the Berkshire Under 15 cricket side while a pupil at Abingdon School.
When not playing golf, Dier is a mechanical engineer with a local petro-chemical company. "I have no plans to retire early," he said.
His chosen charity for the year is the Oxford Children's Hospital.
