Embarassment is nothing new to Oxford City Council.
The fact that artists' impressions of a re-vamped Bonn Square were released by mistake merely confirms the belief that all too often the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
But this example of human error -- for that is all it was -- is nothing compared with the thinking, or lack of it, about why the work needs to be done.
The square is a haven for drunks and drug addicts. They flock there like pigeons in Trafalgar Square. They offend the sensitivity of the majority and show Oxford in a poor light to visitors and tourists.
But who believes an £85,000 facelift will deter the drunks and addicts for any longer than it takes the concrete to dry? This problem will not be removed by either raising or lowering the surface of the square.
Therefore, when the 'proper plans' for Bonn Square are presented for us all to see, we hope someone will have addressed the root problem. Unless they do, it will be £85,000 down the drain.
