Southern Counties North: Witney moved into second place in the table, one point behind Aylesbury with a thrilling 28-21 victory over Henley Wanderers.

Henley, playing with the elements behind them in the first half, could manage only one converted try against an outstanding Witney defence, with No 8 Martin Lyall shining in his first start for more than 12 months.

It was Lyall who went over for Witney's first try to make the half-time score 7-5.

With the wind behind them, fly half Ollie Smith put in some searching kicks to set up good attacking positions.

Witney's reward came when full back Luke Hollick went over in the corner after exchanging passes with wing Henry Lamb for a converted try.

Henley regained the lead when Smith's kick was charged down on halfway and the visitors showed some wonderful footballing skills to dribble the ball over the line for a 14-12 lead.

For the next 15 minutes, Witney played their best rugby, stretching the Wanderers' defence to its limits.

The pressure paid off, with Hollick adding his second try, while a lively break by centre Chris Murray set up another for second row Alan Richens.

Henley replied with a converted try to reduce the deficit to 22-21, but two Smith penalties saw Witney home.
