Wallingford 7, Old Dunstonians 12 (aet): Wallingford's dream of a Twickenham final died in an extra-time thriller at The Hithercroft on Saturday.
The Oxfordshire side were beaten 12-7 at home to Old Dunstonians in the last 16 of the Powergen Junior Vase.
But they will be kicking themselves for not finishing the job in normal time.
Wallingford dominated territory and possession for large periods of both the first and second halves.
But on a blustery day that made running rugby difficult, Wallingford never quite found the killer pass in the backs.
The conditions also made goal-kicking troublesome, but skipper Olli Henderson probably should have landed a straightforward penalty attempt early in the game and another 13 minutes into the second half.
Wallingford started the brighter of the two sides, their small but technically excellent set of forwards getting on top of a big Old Dunstonians pack.
But it needed a moment of magic from home full back Henry Venners to break the deadlock on 19 minutes.
Venners, who scored four tries in a game in a previous round, fielded a clearing kick on halfway, before weaving and bulldozing past half a dozen defenders and crashing over under the posts.
It was a thrilling score, and Venners looked capable of repeating the feat every time he got the ball. It made Wallingford's failure to bring him into the line more often something of a mystery.
Henderson's conversion made it 7-0, but the lead was wiped out six minutes before the interval when the Kent side pounced on a stray pass on halfway, Mark McKillop racing in at the corner. Fly half Ben Thomas slotted the kick.
Wallingford were suddenly looking shaky.
They had lock Ian Jefferies sent to the sin bin for persistent offside - and even after he returned, the visiting pack had the upper hand.
But Wallingford bravely fought back, with Jefferies and No 8 Peter Thorns both making thrilling breaks.
Now it was Old Dunstonians on the back foot, and their discipline began to erode as they were twice marched back ten yards by the referee for back-chat.
A Wallingford score at this point might have killed them off, but Henderson hooked a simple penalty and Old Dunstonians survived.
Henderson was wide of the mark with an altogether tougher penalty chance in the fifth minute of extra time, before the visitors scored the decisive try.
A quickly-taken tap penalty from excellent and abrasive scrum half Nick Mott took Old Dunstonians deep into the Wallingford 22, and the ball was then spun across the backs for full back Simon Groves to touch down.
As hard as they continued to fight, Wallingford never looked like getting back in it after that.
Wallingford: Venners, Hull (Lewis 91), Collett, Don Jenkins, C Jenkins, Henderson, Viljoen, Blaszko, Mount, E Jenkins (Payne 80), Jefferies (sin bin 37-47), Keable, Dor Jenkins (sin bin 92), Bowd (Robertson 17), Thorns.
