A popular youth club could close after volunteers threatened to walk out after complaints about noise.

Club workers, council officers and a local councillor said it would be a tragedy if the Willy Freund Club in Bretch Hill, Banbury, was to shut.

The volunteers threatened to leave after a person complained to the club and to Cherwell District Council.

Club organiser Roy Dancer said: "We have been visited by environmental health officers who say the noise level is not unduly loud, especially if neighbours have their windows closed, but the volunteers who run the club are close to throwing the towel in."

Two CCTV cameras, put up recently to protect the club buildings, were vandalised at the weekend.

The club, which has 560 members, meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8pm. The average attendance is 60 to 70.

Mr Dancer said: "The club is well run and there is no trouble. If it closes there will be massive gaps in the lives of the members."

Banbury town councillor Keith Strangwood said: "A local resident has decided there is a problem with the club. I hope it can be sorted."

Grahame Helm, the council's environmental health manager, said: "We are treating it as we do any complaint and if it is justified we will look at what action the club might take."
