Presenting the news on television is all in a day's work for broadcaster Peter Sahla - and now he is also making the news.

Mr Sahla, from Vicarage Road, Steventon, near Abingdon, has become one of only a handful of people in the country to be fitted with revolutionary "smart" lens implants that adjust his vision.

The presenter works for Bloomberg TV, a cable-satellite economic news station. In recent years, his eyesight had deteriorated to the point where it was becoming a serious handicap.

He said: "One of the real problems at work was reading the teleprompter.

"The light seemed to reflect on it and I couldn't find any suitable anti-glare glasses.

"I've had to wear glasses for the past 20 years or so but my eyesight eventually reached the point where I needed two different pairs, for distance and close work."

Becoming desperate, Mr Sahla attended a talk on eye surgery in Reading and was advised to contact the Rosen Eye Clinic in Manchester, the only centre of its kind in the country.

He was told that he was a suitable candidate for an entirely new type of lens that would adjust naturally for both distance and close vision -- and, what's more, it worked.

Mr Sahla said: "I just couldn't believe how much clearer and crisper everything looked and I have never had to wear any form of glasses since. It was just like I had been watching a poor picture on an old TV and was suddenly looking at a brand new set with a crystal-clear image.

"What's more, my wife said that without my specs I looked years younger!"
