South West 1: Chinnor secured their second successive away victory when they followed their outstanding result at Clevedon by beating lowly Barnstaple 32-12.

Choosing to play into a bitter wind, Barnstaple soon found themselves seven points adrift, as a crunching tackle by Dave Seymour set up as try for prop Simon Matthews.

James Hewitt converted from near the touchline and then added a penalty goal, before prop Joe Winpenny scored from a rolling maul.

With Hewitt kicking another penalty in the 40th minute, Chinnor appeared in control at 18-0 ahead, but Barnstaple hit back with a converted try.

After the break, Arnoldus Du Toit Serdyn came on for the injured Andy Milburn and Chinnor's pack took control.

Tom Johnson scored from a rolling maul, Hewitt converting with a magnificent kick.

Chinnor suffered a blow when full back Alan Cawston left the field with a horrific facial injury, which needed hospital treatment, while Du Toit Serdyn and Barnstaple's Marcus Keenor were sin-binned after a flare-up.

A well-worked try for home winger Jones reduced the deficit, but Du Toit Serdyn returned to score a try in the last minute of injury time, which was converted by the reliable Hewitt.

Oxford Harlequins appeared to have done the hard work in the first half, when they trailed Cheltenham only 10-5 at the break, despite having played into the strong wind. But the visitors added the only score of the second half to record a 15-5 victory.

Cheltenham opened the scoring against the run of play with a converted try and increased the lead with a penalty.

Quins, with newcomer lock Neil Pearce and Ben Brusch commanding the line-out, responded when scrum half Anthony Cope sent wing Martin Nutt over in the corner for an excellent try, while two Chris Penney penalties into the gale-force wind dropped short.

In the second half, Cheltenham came into the game more and scored another try.

Quins went close several times, camping in the Cheltenham 22, but without reward.
