Kidlington CC are set for a major boost as they prepare for their first season in the Oxford Times Cherwell League's top flight with the capture of former New Zealand Central Districts all-rounder Kris Howes.
An opening bowler and middle order batsman, Howes has lived in the UK for three years, having originally joined Midlands Premier League club Barnt Green as an overseas player in 2001.
In that year, the Birmingham club reached the final of the National Club Champion- ship.
Mark Strong will once again captain Kidlington, with Andrew Buckingham as vice-captain and club coach.
Buckingham, who set a new Cherwell League batting record in 2003 with 1,067 runs at an average of more than 80, will be pivotal as Kidlington go in search of promotion to the Home Counties Premier League.
Meanwhile, Kidlington break new ground this season when they enter the National Club Championship for the first time.
They start with a home tie against Hampshire Premier League side Hungerford on Sunday, April 25.
Indoor nets begin on Sunday at Kidlington & Gosford Sports Centre 9.30-11.30). Contact is John Kitson on 07973 131464.
Kidlington are looking to arrange some 4th XI friendlies this year, with a view to entering a fourth team in the league in 2005.
The club will also be running youth teams at under 11, 13 and 15. Contact Nick Duval on 01865 377277.
The two charges relating to the spirit of the game, of which Kidlington CC were found guilty at a Cherwell League hearing last month, both involved a row with an umpire, and not an attack on the league as suggested in the Oxford Mail on January 16.
