War veterans are rethinking their £3m clubhouse and flats scheme after householders complained it would ruin their view of Oxford's dreaming spires.

The Marston Royal British Legion Club is redrawing its plans to build the state-of-the-art new clubhouse and and two blocks of flats on its Hadow Road site, because of complaints from residents.

An Oxford City Council report into the plans said some residents were worried about the famous views, while others were concerned the development would lead to more traffic, overspill parking and late night noise.

Eileen Bird, 91, of Hadow Road, said: "I'm in favour of the club because I'm a member, but it's access to the site I'm worried about. There is only one way in and out, and all the traffic will have to come up Crotch Crescent and Hadow Road."

The club wants to demolish its dilapidated clubhouse, and build 19 flats in two blocks to sell for profit.

When the plans were first unveiled, the club said it believed the flats had been designed to avoid affecting views of the dreaming spires.

The planning application, due to be discussed on February 25 has been deferred until new plans are drawn up.
