Warning letters from the police have gone out to market traders who park illegally and dangerously in the centre of Wantage.
They have been sent as part of an attempt to ease congestion by traders and shoppers who ignore traffic regulations.
Acting Inspector for Wantage, Jane Rennells, warned stall holders they could face a £60 fine and a court appearance if they broke the law. In a letter to traders, she said: "It has been brought to my attention that some are using the zig-zag areas of the pelican crossing to unload and load vehicles on Wantage market days.
"This practice causes a hazard to both pedestrians and other road users. I have liaised with the town council and agreed police will take positive actions by way of prosecution."
Wantage market trader Jimmy James said some stall holders did have problems parking legally but believed a meeting with the council could help find a solution.
But town mayor Jenny Hannaby said the matter had been taken out of the council's hands.
