I read Ken Beames's letter (Oxford Mail, January 31) with interest, especially his criticism of Peers School at Littlemore, Oxford.

I spent a day at Peers two years ago and was impressed by the positive atmosphere and the enthusiasm of all teachers and a majority of pupils.

There are many factors underlying pupil failure.

To be pragmatic, not all pupils are gifted and a significant proportion today possess a warped work ethic -- not every person values education.

Secondly, not all parents are prepared to attend parents' evenings and this is indicative of a lack of parental support for their child's development. In fact, it could be perceived as parental neglect.

Thirdly, take a look around you. I have seen more private schools in Oxfordshire than I have in the whole of my native Wales. Is this factor considered when appraising Oxfordshire's state schools? No. In the 1980s the best Welsh rugby players defected to Rugby League and our game declined tragically -- a nice analogy.

It is worth noting that the old O-Level was designed for the top 25 per cent of the cohort.

Assuming educational standards remain unchanged, Oxfordshire's results are impressive. Someone should get in the ring on this issue.
