An 18-year-old student who had more than £5,000 worth of drugs stashed in his bedroom wardrobe has been jailed for three years.

Phillipe Vernalde was seen throwing a bag of cocaine from his bedroom window when police burst into his flat in Spenlove Close, Abingdon, after a tip-off.

The raid on November 21 uncovered a metal safe in Vernalde's wardrobe containing £1,295 cash, 260 ecstasy tablets and 22 LSD paper squares. Police found the plastic bag he had thrown from his window contained 24.6g of cocaine.

The drugs had a combined street value of up to £5,035.

Police discovered a "tick-list" of sold drugs worth £4,000, for which Vernalde was awaiting payment. Metal scales, a grinder, re-sealable bags, "pudding powder" used to cut drugs and about eight grammes of powder used to make ecstasy tablets were also found.

Vernalde, an IT student at Oxford and Cherwell College in Oxpens Road, Oxford, admitted six counts of possessing drugs with intent to supply at Oxford Crown Court on Monday. Two further charges relating to possession of 32.4g of cannabis were ordered to lie on file.

Peter Coombe, defending, said Vernalde began dabbling with class A drugs when he started college at 16. He said: "He fell in with the wrong crowd and later moved in with a drug user. He became heavily addicted himself."

Judge Anthony King sentenced Vernalde to three years each for possession with intent to supply, to run concurrently. He ordered the £1,295 from the safe to be given to the Crown Prosecution Service.
