The principal of King Alfred's Community and Sports College in Wantage, Bernard Clarke, is leaving after six and a half years in the post.
Mr Clarke, 59, leaves at the end of the summer term to become a consultant headteacher in Kent in September.
"At my age and stage, you tend not to expect new opportunities, particularly as exciting as this so when one presents itself, the temptation is too much," said Mr Clarke.
"I think the school is in good health, but as my wife says, you don't want to outstay your welcome."
Mr Clarke supported moves to create one 'super school' to replace King Alfred's, which is located on three sites. The school would serve both Wantage and Grove.
However, a public consultation last year revealed most residents wanted separate secondary schools for each community. The survey came after months of debate. It revealed that 59 per cent of residents preferred two schools each catering for 1,250 students.
