Oxford UCCE staged a spirited reply to a star-studded Surrey team's 452-5 dec on the second day of their opening first-class match in The Parks yesterday.

They were dismissed for 267, Omar Anwar making 82, but the follow-on was not enforced and at the close, Surrey were 62-1 in their second innings, a lead of 237.

Indian seamer Amit Suman struck an early blow at the start of the Surrey innings. He had former Oxfordshire wicket-keeper Jon Batty, an old Blue, caught by Ollie Hutton at 15.

However, the remainder of the innings was dominated by the batsmen.

Scott Newman and Mark Ramprakash added 141 for the second wicket, before Mike Munday bowled the former immediately after he completed a century.

That was followed by a partnership of 260 involving three batsmen. Ramprakash was joined by James Benning and both completed centuries.

The England Test player 'retired hurt' on 113, while Benning went on to hit 128, before becoming the second of Munday's three victims, and Alistair Brown was unbeaten with 61.

Oxford made a poor start when they batted, losing the first four wickets for 66, but they were rescued by Anwar and Josh Knappett, a Freshman at Oxford Brookes, who put on 108.

Scores: Surrey 452-5 dec (J Benning 128, M Ramprakash 113, S Newman 100, A Brown 61no, Munday 3-87) & 62-1, Oxford University 267 (O Anwar 82).
