Cyclists in Oxford have called for better safety measures at a busy junction near the city's railway station.

Members of the Cyclox group, which campaigns on behalf of the city's two-wheeled commuters, are demanding that a hatched junction box in Botley Road, opposite Mill Street and Cripley Road, be enlarged for the greater safety of cyclists.

A black spot area outside the railway station, which includes a strip beneath the railway bridge, has seen several accidents in recent years, including one fatality.

Earlier this month a 34-year-old woman cyclist suffered chest injuries when her bike was dragged under the wheels of a lorry as it turned left into Roger Dudman Way at the back of the station.

After the accident Oxfordshire County Council vowed to review cycle safety on Botley Road.

In May 2000, Rachel Barker, 30, died after her bike was in collision with a tipper truck just yards from this month's accident.

The Cyclox campaigners, who met on Tuesday in the West Oxford Community Centre in Botley Road, nearby, are also calling for better road signs, including 'Think Bike' to be put up on the approaches to the city.

They have asked members to send letters to Oxfordshire County Council following a recent accident involving a female cyclist, who was badly injured, outside the railway station.
