Parents in Oxford are furious their children are forced to live next to derelict garages they suspect are contaminated by asbestos.

Residents have been campaigning for the site in Barracks Lane, Cowley, to be turned into a community garden for two years.

Oxford City Council has promised to demolish the garages as soon as possible and is investigating claims of asbestos contamination.

Meanwhile, the site has been left easily accessible to the public.

Annie Davy, of Kenilworth Avenue, said: "My children are living next to a dangerous site which I believe is full of asbestos.

"I took my 12-year-old daughter to the area committee meeting so she can learn about local democracy. Her lessons are not very good ones -- she asks what the point is, as nothing has happened."

Cowley councillors backed the plans for the community garden but the council's executive board has said more consultation with residents is needed.

The council sent an inspector to the site to investigate whether asbestos was present.

Sue Tetzner, 37, of Barracks Lane, said: "The garages are not safe. They are not lit and attract groups of kids and teenagers, especially at night. Older people living nearby and those living alone are very scared of them."

A council spokesman said: "The garages will be demolished and the councillor in charge of housing, Val Smith, has asked for that to happen as soon as possible, as well as further tests for asbestos.

"The council is considering a range of options for the future of the site, including affordable housing or turning it into a community garden.

"While some residents have expressed support for a community garden, we need to consult all residents, especially those living next to the garages."

Residents will be sent a survey and the council will organise a public meeting in May before a decision is made on the site's future.
