Police posters in Oxford are warning young people of the consequences of attacking buses with bricks.

The posters were produced following Oxford Mail reports of how passengers demanded tough action against the youths who put lives in danger.

There are three designs, created by the Thames Valley Police press office.

One features images of a bus and someone holding a brick, with the caption: 'One smash can end in a crash.'

Another has a picture of a house and the word 'Evicted' spelling out to parents of culprits what they can expect if they live in Oxford City Council homes and their children do not heed the warnings.

The third shows a bus stop, and has the caption, 'Witnessed vandalism on the buses? Don't lose your bus service.'

Police are also producing a leaflet, to be sent out with local newspapers.

Sgt Paul Hembury, Oxford police bus disorder officer, said: "They spell out what culprits can look forward to and the repercussions for parents, in terms of eviction, if this continues.

"The culprits could face criminal damage charges if buses are hit, and if a driver loses control as a result of being hit in the face, they could be charged with grievous bodily harm in a criminal court.

"The bus companies can support drivers and passengers in making compensation claims in civil courts."

He said posters had been placed in community centres and shops.

Last year, the Oxford Mail reported how the attacks plagued bus drivers and passengers, particularly in Blackbird Leys and Barton.

In January, we reported how Barton councillor Mick McAndrews called a public meeting to decide how to tackle the problem.

Sgt Hembury said since then there had been a reduction in the number of attacks, but admitted the problem had not gone away.

He said there had been recent stoning incidents in Blackbird Leys and Rose Hill. The latest was at The Oval, Rose Hill, on April 19.

He said: "That involved a large group of youths who attempted to intimidate foreign students who tried to board a bus.

"Once on board, the the bus driver's takings were stolen, and the incident is being investigated."
