Residents are being urged to name and shame their neighbours if they park dangerously on blind corners, illegally on double yellow lines or on grass verges.

Wantage mayor Jenny Hannaby said residents should be prepared to report neighbours to prevent accidents and damage to the local environment.

She is asking for names and photographic evidence of residents parking illegally or dangerously along Harcourt Road, Wantage. She added: "With this evidence we can take action against people who are ruining the neighbourhood4 not just for themselves but for others.

"Residents should get themselves organised and gather the evidence which we can take to the relevant council officers who will deal with this matter.

"Harcourt Road is where I grew up, it's where I started my life here in Wantage. It's a lovely estate with lots of green spaces and trees. It's sad to see residents destroying their own environment."

Parking in Harcourt Road is a worsening problem as the numbers of cars owned by each household grows.

Vans and lorries are also parked regularly on the soft verges creating deep ruts and marring the look of the estate, which was built to house Harwell Power Station workers in the 1950s.

One resident who has been campaigning for more than two years to persuade Oxfordshire County Council to act against his neighbours said the problem had become so bad he was considering moving.

Ray Coleman said neither the police or county council seemed prepared to tackle the problem.

Mrs Hannaby said an integrated traffic and transport study planned by the county council for Wantage later this year would investigate the issues.
