Police are launching a major operation to stop motorcyclists dying on Oxfordshire's roads.

Thames Valley Police have joined with Surrey, Hampshire, Kent and the Metropolitan forces to launch Operation Triumph.

It comes after 37 bikers were killed and 300 seriously injured in the Thames Valley in the past year.

From April 25, officers will be out on known motorcycle routes to stop bikers who are riding carelessly, dangerously or at excessive speeds. This marks the start of the operation, which will continue throughout the summer months.

Sgt Phil Haseler, of Thames Valley roads policing department, who organised Operation Triumph said: "This is not about persecuting motorcyclists. We do not want to stop people's enjoyment of going out on a ride, we simply want them to arrive home safely." The police launched a scheme earlier this year to issue red and yellow cards to bikers. Yellow cards are issued instead of roadside warnings and offer advice and details of advanced training.

Red cards give riders an alternative to prosecution for careless or inconsiderate riding.
