Bottles and bricks were thrown during a large fight involving Cambridge United supporters and Oxford residents.

A group of about 20 Cambridge supporters arrived at The Blackbird pub, in Blackbird Leys, Oxford, on Saturday afternoon and attempted to force their way in.

According to drinkers at The Blackbird, the Cambridge supporters were equipped with weapons and seemed intent on trouble.

Police said they clashed with a number of Oxford United supporters and other Blackbird Leys residents at about 2.50pm. About 50 people were involved in the fracas.

The Cambridge fans were rounded up and escorted on a bus to Oxford Railway Station, before making their way back to Cambridge.

A 70-year-old Blackbird Leys resident, who drinks in the pub but who asked not to be named, said: "There was about 20 of them who were tooled-up before they got here."

He said the pub doors were locked and people inside the building prevented the Cambridge fans getting in. "It's the first time I have seen any hooliganism here." he said.

A 23-year-old Oxford supporter who was drinking at the pub before the game, said: "Effectively, the locals and bar staff had been forced to defend the pub along with a few straggling fans on their way to the football."

Police searched for offensive weapons, and arrested one person in possession of class A drugs.

Pc Simon Feist, Oxford police's football liaison officer, said: "We responded to the incident quickly and promptly. We managed to isolate the Cambridge supporters and spirited them back to the railway station."
