Off-spinner Giles Peddy looks to have played his last game for Oxfordshire.
The former St Edward's School pupil, who plays for Hamstead, has been struck down by a mystery shoulder injury which has badly affected his bowling.
Skipper Keith Arnold said: "He has a serious shoulder problem which means he will have to pack up bowling for good.
"He was struggling with it last year, and he has been to all sorts of specialists and no-one seems to know what the problem is. It is a real blow."
Oxon also look set to be without Cropredy all-rounder Richard Lynch this season as he has changed his job and will be working more weekends.
The county continue their build-up to the new season when they take on Banbury at White Post Road tomorrow (12).

Oxfordshire batsman Robbie Eason has made a rapid recovery after breaking a leg playing football.
The 23-year-old opener suffered a fracture to the lower fibula of his right leg while playing for Risborough Rangers on Saturday, April 2.
He was expected to face four to six weeks on the sidelines.
But he had his cast off nine days ago, and played for Horspath against Banbury Twenty on Saturday, making 34 in a four-wicket win.
