Graham Rix will do everything he can to keep Dean Whitehead at Oxford United.
The U's player of the season, who is out of contract at the end of this month, produced another superb performance - including a spectacular headed goal - as United ended their Division 3 campaign with a 2-0 win over Rochdale on Saturday.
At the final whistle, the 22-year-old was given a rousing reception by the U's fans which reduced him to tears in what could prove an emotional send-off.
For many, it was a clear indication that the midfielder had played his last game for the club.
"Dean Whitehead is a quality player, and I will do whatever I can to keep him here for next season," Rix said.
"He has got a very bright future ahead of him, and I hope that will be here.
"I want him to stay, the chairman wants him to stay, the fans want him to stay, but it's up to Dean."
Whitehead admitted that the send-off the fans gave him was very special.
"That was probably the highlight of my season," he said. "It was very emotional, because I'm an Oxford lad and to get that from the fans was unbelievable.
"I do want to be here next season, but at the same time, every player wants to play at the highest level he can.
"Graham Rix has been different class since he's been here, and he could be a massive factor as to my future. I honestly don't know what's going on, but hopefully everything can be sorted."
