Work has begun on a new controlled crossing outside King Alfred's Sports and Community College's east site, Charlton Road, Wantage -- after a four-year campaign.
Calls for the crossing followed safety concerns.
Liberal Democrat town and county councillor Jim Moley blamed the delay on a shortage of funding to implement the scheme.
He said: "There have been many delays, but it's vital because up to 600 children have to cross Charlton Road, which is part of the busy A417, to get to school.
"This will vastly improve safety for the children."
