A popular former headteacher has died. John Davidson, born in 1929, was head of Manor School, Long Hanborough, between 1962 and 1989.
Mr Davidson trained at Borough Road College, Isleworth, and taught at Pinner School in Middlesex before moving to Long Hanborough in 1962.
He retired in 1989, having been seconded to Westminster Teaching Training College for the final few years of his career, so that other young teachers could benefit from his experience.
Mr Davidson was known throughout the communities of Long Hanborough and Freeland in particular, not just for his leadership at the Manor School, but also for his involvement with local community theatre, fundraising efforts and the Methodist Church. He was a member of the Freeland Gardening Club, was interested in calligraphy, bowling, and was involved with the University of the Third Age (U3A). His son Jon, 45, said: "To him teaching was not a job, it was a way of life in which all parents, staff and children participated as an extended family.
"He was described as energetic, full of life, and enthusiastic by many people who sent cards after his death.
"He made a difference to everyone he met."
Mr Davidson died on August 8. A celebration of his life was held on August 12 at High Street Methodist Church, Witney, with more than 300 people attending.
He is survived by his wife Pamela, his three sons, Jonathan, Andrew and Nicholas and five grandchildren.
