Frilford Heath rower Robin Bourne-Taylor saw his chances of Olympic glory disappear.
Bourne-Taylor was part of the men's eight rowing crew that failed to make the final after finishing third behind Canada and Germany in their repechage.
Former Abingdon School pupil Bourne-Taylor is a three-time Oxford Blue and is Oxford University Boat Club president next year.
However, Wednesday was a superb day for British competitors, with four more medals coming their way.
Leslie Law added individual silver to team bronze as Great Britain's three-day eventers weighed in with two medals on a dramatic night at the Markopoulo Equestrian Centre.
Law claimed silver in the individual three-day event, to go with the bronze he won earlier in the day, along with Pippa Funnell, Jeanette Brakewell and Mary King, in the team three-day event.
At one stage, Britain looked set for silver after Germany's Bettina Hoy crossed the start-line twice and was penalised with 12 points, moving Britain up to second.
But on appeal, the Germans were reinstated as Olympic champions.
Two other bronze medals, for Helen Reeves in canoeing's K1 kayak and Alison Williamson in the women's individual 70m archery, took Britain's tally to six.
