The David Kelly affair simply will not go away.

Just when the controversy surrounding the death of the Government weapons expert seemed to be fading, new claims have once again cast doubt over the conclusion that he took his own life.

Two paramedics who attended the scene of the tragedy in Longworth, Oxfordshire in 2003 say claims that Dr Kelly cut his own wrist were not backed up by the amount of blood on the wounds.

Thames Valley Police, however, say they are fully satisfied with their original inquiry and will not be reopening the case.

Even Dr Kelly's close friend, Tom Mangold, is adamant that it was suicide, but the paramedics' statements are sure to keep the conspiracy theories alive.

This long-running saga has taken its toll of all who have become involved in it. The government's credibility has suffered, as has Lord Hutton's; several high-profile resignations have resulted from it and most tragic of all, an ordinary family has been torn apart by the grief of losing a husband and father.

For their sake, we hope the fuss will die down soon.

But with so many questions still unanswered, it's likely that we will hear more of this sad affair for some time to come.
