Fans believed to have racially abused two black Swansea players last week were spotted by police during Oxford United's match against Cambridge on Saturday.
A spotter squad of police at United's home game recognised what they believe is one of the men filmed making monkey noises at Swansea City player Adrian Forbes during the match at the Kassam Stadium last Wednesday night.
The incident was alleged to have happened after the final whistle, as Forbes left the pitch. Club officials condemned the incident and said they would be working with police to track the culprits down. Swansea had won the game 1-0.
Officers will be interviewing the suspect formally this week after they have had chance to follow up clues to the identity of the rest of the abusers.
Pc Simon Feist said: "We have had a lot of help from fans who think the abuse was a disgrace.
"Many people thought that sort of taunting was a thing of the past and were disgusted at what went on.
"We have had many phone calls suggesting identities of the culprits and we are following them all up.
"We are working in a structured way so that we can get everyone involved. It was a disgraceful episode which shocked many people."
At United's game on Saturday, a team of police mingled with the crowds trying to spot the men who had been filmed at an away match.
Pc Feist added: "We spotted one we believe was to blame. We have talked to him and warned him he will be interviewed this week.
"We have not arrested or charged him but if he is one of the people involved then charges will follow."
Anyone with information should call Pc Feist on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
