David Denny defied the pain of a fractured foot to help City of Oxford clinch promotion to the Premier Division of the Speedo League, following their second place in the final round at Reading.

Denny, 28, suffered the injury during his first relay event causing the foot to swell up. But that didn't stop him finishing fourth in the open butterfly.

Denny also had to compete in the men's open freestyle relay.

The team finished second behind Amersham, who won the gala by two points.

Emma Ball took the 15 and under 100m backstroke, as did Joe Canlan-Shaw in the men's open event.

The team excelled in the butterfly. Melissa Hawtin won her 11 and under 50m race, as did Myles Taylor and Matthew Sanderson in their 13 and under and 15 and under events respectively.

Sam van de Schootbrugge won the 11 and under 50m freestyle and knocked a second off the national qualifying time in the 13 and under 100m backstroke.

Van de Schootbrugge, Myles Taylor, David Norridge and Jack Tokelove then won the 13 and under freestyle relay.

Ball's powerful backstroke contributed to the success of the 15 and under medley team, also comprising Pippa Canlan-Shaw, Melanie Cadle and Allanor Jenkins-Strong.

Canlan-Shaw also finished third in the backstroke and breaststroke.

Individual second places went to Laura Ralph (13 and under breaststroke and freestyle), Simon Ward (11and under backstroke), Hawtin and van de Schootbrugge (11 and under breaststroke) and Jenkins-Strong (15 and under freestyle).

Team second places went to the 11 and under boys relay squad of Richard Cadle, Benji Royal, Simon Ward and Sam van de Schootbrugge, who won both the freestyle and medley.

He also helped Tokelove, Taylor and Norridge win the 13 and under boys medley relay, as did the girls team of Carla Prince, Ralph, Elizabeth McCormack and Hannah Davies in the medley relay.
