Sir - If the AA wants to keep my custom, it should put its idea of an A34 motorway (Oxford Mail, December 15) where it belongs - in the dusbin of silly, costly and futile ideas.

Oxford residents already suffer far too much from the background roar of traffic from the ring road and the A34.

Turning that highway into a motorway will clog up the ring road, and do more damage to the countryside than any amount of new house building in the Green Belt.

What we need are bus lanes during the rush hours on the A34 and A40. That way, buses from Witney, Bicester and Abingdon won't have to sit in traffic.

We need new park-and-rides to operate directly and speedily from the county towns.

Better still, we should encourage people to use the train and get a bike.

That is where our taxes should be invested, not on self-defeating and noise-polluting autobahns.

The AA is off my Christmas card list this year.
