The accidents on the A34 in recent weeks have caused serious injuries. In addition, the economic cost has been high.

These incidents give us a taste of what will happen when the A34 reaches capacity in a few years.

At the Local Plan Inquiry into Didcot West's development last week, the Highways Agency representative painted a gloomy picture of this major national trunk road's ability to sustain further growth in the south of the county.

He also condemned the emerging Local Plans of the Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire District Councils as having "no adequate transport strategy" to support the housing and business development they have planned with Oxfordshire County Council.

There needs to be real planning of a road framework that could support growth in Oxfordshire.
