A new surface is expected to be put down on a road to try to stop drivers skidding into the ditch. Several drivers have had their cars written off, while others have lost control outside a quarry in Bicester Road, Stratton Audley.

The road is swept regularly by contractors for the quarry operators and there are two wheel washes within the site.

But drivers think their problems are caused by a film of mud being left on the road.

Now a new surface is likely to be laid next summer to improve grip.

County councillor for the area Catherine Fulljames said: "We are going to get a new surface and take another look at the road sweeping and wheel washing operations." The only thing is we are going to have to wait through the winter months when the surface gets worse in frost and snow before the work on the surface is done."

Parish council chairman Janet James welcomed the two moves.

Mrs James said: "It is possible a new surface may well solve the problem because it does seem to be very smooth. A review of the wheelwashing can only be beneficial."

Steve Bowden, county council deputy area engineer said: "We hope contractors will be able to put a chippings and tarmac top dressing on the road in April or May.

"When the quarry was re-opened a few years ago the road was widened and a new surface put down. The quarry operators are doing all they can. But may be a thin film of mud is left on the surface, which can make the road slippery."
