Sir - Empty properties, empty promises. It appears that city councillor Patrick Murray has just woken up to find so many empty properties in Oxford (Oxford Mail, December 13).

Where has he been all these years when so much has been written about the shocking state of houses in Rose Hill erected after the Second World War?

Why wasn't he on the council 'housing tour' which would have provided him with answers?

When the Liberal Democrats held the reins of power on the city council, their housing spokesman, David Connett, admitted at the south east area meeting that Rose Hill had many defective, structurally unsound buildings.

During his term, more than 140 homes were boarded up with promises they would be replaced.

There have been many excuses -- no Government grants, no regeneration funds. Then we read we are a rich country.

Even the few amenities we had have been taken away from us by the University and city council due to planning officers not enforcing conditions.

New Labour, too, have failed to live up to their promises.

Under the guise of replacing 'Orlit' pre-fab houses, they are proposing to demolish brick-built flats and sheltered accommodation for the elderly to get a site for new housing.

They say they will consult residents and take our comments into consideration. A year has gone by since I last saw any plans.

An exhibition has been promised in the new year to display plans and invite comments. This will fulfil New Labour's obligation, but I doubt changes will be made. I have a strong suspicion it is fait accompli. VIM RODRIGO, Rivermead Road, Rose Hill, Oxford
