Nightclubbers have helped raise thousands for children's hospitals across Britain, including Oxford's new centre.

Park End nightclub raised more than £3,400 through three charity nights held on Bank Holiday Sundays throughout this year -- and hopes to boost funds further over the festive period.

The nightspot is giving a percentage of its door and bar takings after top DJs, including Judge Jules, Tim Westwood and Anne Savage, pulled in thousands of punters on the charity nights, called Republica.

Club managers were so impressed with the support they received that they signed up to the Gift Aid tax reclaim scheme for charities.

It gives partygoers the chance to donate money knowing that 28p will be reclaimed from the Inland Revenue for every £1 given.

The club launched the scheme as part of a festive bonanza, supported by celebrity television presenters Ant and Dec.

A portion of money from its takings on December 22, 23, Christmas Eve and Boxing Day will be added to the fundraising pot, along with Gift Aid pledges.

Park End's owners Luminar Leisure are then expected to boost the total with a donation and money will be distributed to paediatric hospitals, including the Oxford Children's Hospital campaign, in the new year.

Assistant manager Lee Simpson said: "Last year, we raised £10,000 with the money added by Luminar and we're hoping we will have topped that this year.

"We're so pleased with the success of the Republica nights and will definitely be running them again in 2005."

Judge Jules appeared at the nightclub over the Easter weekend to present a cheque to Oxford Children's Hospital representatives in front of 1,200 revellers. Gift Aid forms are available at the nightclub's reception.
