Didcot Tn 2, Bury Tn 1: An Ian Concannon brace blasted Didcot Town into the semi-finals of the FA Vase with a nailbiting victory over Eastern Counties League outfit Bury Town on Saturday.

Not for the first time in this tremendous run, Didcot showed their spirit and determination for a battle. As in the fifth-round tie at Colne, they fell behind, before grabbing a thrilling victory.

Playing in front of a record crowd of 1,220, Didcot were quickly into their stride, and in the early stages, Paul Powell showed Bury just what he is capable of, a devastating burst of pace out-stripping Mark Hanton.

As he jinked into the box, Hanton appeared to clip Powell's heels, but referee Mark Murphy waved away Didcot's penalty appeals.

Bradley Ward, so inspirational in the last round, had a dig from 20 yards shortly afterwards, but found Bury keeper Paul Cudworth equal to his effort, getting down well to hold on.

Against the run of play, Bury took the lead with a cracking move that thoroughly deserved a goal.

A break from defence saw James Tatham race down the right, then lay the ball back to Craig Parker in the centre.

Parker deftly touched the ball on to former Colchester and Wycombe striker Steve McGavin, who chipped in a delightful shot over the outstretched hand of keeper Chris Webb.

Instead of being rocked by the goal, Didcot stepped up a gear.

Andy Cooper went close with a 30-yard drive, before Concannon equalised in style.

Ward's defence-splitting pass picked out Concannon inside the box. He took a moment to compose himself, then drilled home an unstoppable strike from 12 yards.

The Suffolk side came out with more purpose in the second half, and at times, played some neat football.

But for all their possession, Bury could not find a way through a resolute Didcot defence, with Jamie Heapy and Powell leading the line.

And after soaking up the pressure, Didcot caught Bury with a classic counter-attack to take the lead.

Powell cleaned up another Bury attack, then Stuart Beavon's slide-rule pass to Ward on the right split the Bury defence wide open.

Ward's cross to Concannon at the far post left the Didcot hitman in acres of space, and he made no mistake as he calmly slotted home.

Concannon could have completed a hat-trick moments later, but saw his shot creep inches wide from Beavon's pull-back.

Bury continued to hold the upper hand in possession, but Town's back four stood firm.

Then, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Webb made a crucial save, getting down low to hold on to McGavin's goalbound free-kick.

That was Bury's last chance, and as the whistle blew, Loop Meadow erupted in celebration.
