I see the Green Party has come up with yet more scatterbrain ideas for the centre of Oxford (Oxford Mail, February 23).

I think Oxford people have had enough digging up in the centre -- Cornmarket Street, Abingdon Road, plans for Queen Street and now Folly Bridge -- without more.

A green roof, hot water piped under the city (more digging up) and a small tramway.

We tried a tramway at the beginning of the 20th century, but it was thrown out in favour of buses.

Yet there is the germ of a good idea there. Instead of tramway lines in the road running in a circular route from Westgate, may I suggest a motorised or electric small train similar to those in many seaside resorts?

There are splendid ones on the Isle of Wight and in Newquay, with the best-known in the small Montmartre district of Paris.

As they run on ordinary wheels, they need no road construction. It could also be a tourist attraction and far more environmentally friendly than the present sightseeing buses that pollute Oxford. DEREK HONEY, Queen Emma's Dyke, Witney
