John Collinson asks if we really want Oxford to become the Butlin's holiday camp of social housing, and to hell with its history (Oxford Mail, March 5).

If people like him and me don't fight, it could well come to that. I agree we need housing, but in its right place, not to take other business and buildings down that are thriving and steadfast.

Oxford is a very important city for lots of reasons. Councillors can solve the problem of housing need in Oxford. Why not take over Southfield Golf Course? It's more than a mile long, right in the heart of Oxford. They could build thousands of council houses on lush green open space.

The golfers could all move out into the countryside where the grass is greener. There is only one clubhouse, which need not be knocked down as the new tenants could use this for meetings.

Once the council has built all the new houses, it could sell them and go back to square one.

Perhaps Shotover Park could be the next phase. So come on, councillors, it is time you left the little spaces alone which are important to their communities.

Be sensible and brave, not malicious. Pick on the 'Big People'. Surely you know who owns those vast spaces? Now we'll see some councillors' heads turn, I bet. PETER BONNEY, Nuffield Road, Wood Farm, Headington, Oxford
