Retailers in the Westgate Centre say they are already seeing a fall in custom in the wake of Allders' collapse.
The department store ceases to trade on Sunday (March 20) and the future of the 30,000 sq ft property and its 140 staff is uncertain after fashion retailer Primark appeared to have pulled out of moves to take over the store, though the deal may now be revived.
Sue Cave, of shoe menders and engravers Timpson, said: "We've definitely seen a big drop in trade since Allders announced its closing down sale -- today in particular it's dead. The next six months could be terrible -- we rely a lot on trade from Allders. This is bad news for all the businesses in here."
Another retailer, who did not want to be named, said: "I've seen a drop in footfall on last year. Once Allders closes what have people got to come in for any more?
"We need to get a new store in here as soon as possible, even if it's just temporarily, because having Allders empty is not saying good things about how the centre is doing in my eyes."
Since launching its closing down sale, Allders has been packed with shoppers taking advantage of reductions.
Everything from curtains to cutlery have been sold at discounts of up to 70 per cent. Even shelving and display units are up for grabs.
But from next week the store will be locked and for sale boards will go up unless a deal with Primark is agreed.
"It's very sad for everyone that Allders is closing," said another retailer in the centre.
"One lady who had been working for there for about eight years told me she just couldn't find the motivation to keep going in.
"We've heard rumours that Primark could still be interested and while I'd prefer another department store, like House of Fraser, Primark is better than having no-one in there at all."
