Months of studying have paid off for two foster carers who have gained vocational awards which prove how good they are at their jobs.
Melissa Moody of Grove, near Wantage, and Pat Sampson, of Carterton, who are both employed by Oxfordshire County Council, have achieved an NVQ level three - equivalent to an A-Level - in caring for children and young people.
There are now 16 council-employed foster carers who have achieved the award and another 28 are working towards it.
Mrs Moody is currently fostering a 10-month-old baby girl.
She said she studied for the NVQ to get a better understanding of child protection issues: "It was really rewarding and it has given me a lot of confidence.
"A lot of people think fostering is child minding, but it's much more than that. You have to deal with the difficulties and suffering children bring with them."
Human resources officer at the council, Julie Ecclestone, said: "Foster carers don't have to take the NVQ, but we are always very pleased to support those who do. Even experienced foster carers say they learn a lot."
The county council is currently recruiting new foster carers. For information call Helen Oliver on 01865 816057.
