Woodstock Harriers pipped Headington Roadrunners to the men's team title in an exciting finish to the County Road Relays at Hook Norton.

Over the first two of the six legs on the 3.2-mile men's course, Headington held sway, with Chris Dettmar, in the second leg, and Gary Harris, in the first, clocking the two fastest times of the day with 17mins 9secs and 17mins 10secs respectively.

By leg four, however, the Headington challenge had faded, and Woodstock stormed through to win by more than three minutes from Abingdon Amblers (1.52.13) and Oxford City 1.52.41.

Woodstock's 51-year-old Bryan Vaughan was the day's fastest veteran, completing his circuit in 17.46.

City's bronze-medal winning display was particularly impressive as their team included five veterans.

At the end of the first leg, City were in seventh place, but clawed their way up to third spot by the end of leg three.

They edged into second place by the end of the fifth leg, before Abingdon pegged them back to beat them to the silver medal.

In the ladies' race, which consisted of three legs, Witney Roadrunners took the team honours.

Banbury Harriers' Ros Kelling set the fastest time of the day to lead on the first leg in 20.02 from Headington's Helen Barnes (20.17).

But Banbury lost the lead on leg two as Diane Moore put Headington in the driving seat with a leg of 20.40.

On the final leg, however, Nicola Gomm, representing Witney, sailed past both Headington and Banbury, crossing the line in 20.23 to give them an aggregate winning time of 1.03.25.

Headington were second in 1.05.17 and Banbury third.

Abingdon Amblers' Vet 35 ladies' team took the gold medal and there were team silver medals for their Vet 40 men and boys, and a bronze for the girls.
